A Short Introduction to Ayurvedic Medicine

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Lee Dobbins Ayurveda is the Sanskrit work meaning knowledge of life and Ayurvedic Medicine is an alternative form of medicine. It is a traditional Indian medicine which scholars are still not sure about when it actually began, but the general consensus is that it began between 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. In fact scholars are now saying that Ayurvedic Medicine is the oldest form of medicine around and were influenced by both Greek and Traditional Chinese medicine. Because of this claim Ayurvedic Medicine has become labeled the Mother of all Healing. It is the art of balance and longevity for the human body. Understanding Ayurvedic Medicine in the beginning is difficult because of all the strange terminologies that are associated with it. But once someone has got used to these it does become much easier to understand. Ayurveda has it roots in an ancient religion and that religion is Hinduism. In the beginning and for many years the practices of Ayurveda were passed down by word of mouth. When people first began to write down the practices of Ayurveda it was written on to palm leaves and then later on people began to write it down on to manuscripts. These medical manuals are known as the Charaka Samhita and the Sushruta Samhita and are rooted in early Vedic culture. The Vedic culture is inherently spiritual and focuses on love, philosophy and Universal Truths. In Ayurveda a person is not just seen as a body and mind but rather as an entity that includes a spiritual dimension and if you wish to live in harmony with the cosmic law you will live the Ayurvedic way of life. As far as Ayurvedic Medicine is concerned we are all created by the cosmos as either a male energy (Purusha) or a female energy (Prakruti). Whilst the Purusha is passive awareness the Prakruti is an active consciousness. Ayurvedic Medicine is holistic in its concepts as it tries to maintain the balance between the body, mind and spirit of a person. This can be done though the person having the right thoughts, diet and lifestyle. According to Ayurvedic Medicine the body is composed of 5 basic elements which are called the Panchamahabhootas and this is then divided as follows Space Akasha, Air Vayu, Water Apa, Fire Tejas and Earth Prithvi. Where Ayurvedic Medicine is concerned it is imperative that you understand what brings about the balance and what causes an unbalance in a person. It is not just physically, mentally and socially that we have to be in harmony but also spiritually as well. Whether there is an increase or decrease in any of the qualities of the doshas will cause an imbalance. An imbalance can be caused due to time or age (although they do not cause many problems) these problems can be easily rectified. Whilst in the case of an unnatural imbalance and where the problems may be more serious then more attention will need to be applied to achieve the right balance. Such imbalances may be caused due to an inappropriate diet or lifestyle or a traumatic experience or a virus that you have caught. Ayurvedic Medicine consists of many different components which help to bring the doshas back into balance and some such treatments may include meditation, herbal preparation, diet, pulse diagnosis and yoga. Ayurvedic Medicine is made from herbs or a mixture of herbs and will be a combination of one or more of the following: Herbs Minerals Metals Animals Though Ayurvedic Medicine is still being looked at with some skeptism when practiced in the West it has been said to be rather successful when dealing with digestive disorders, skin problems, gynecological problems and alleviating problems related to congested sinuses and stress. Lee Dobbins write for Herbs And Home Remedies where you can learn more about alternative treatments such as Ayurvedic medicine and Ayurvedic herbs. Nokia N93I Review - One Of Nokia’s Latest Camera Phones

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Doug_Smitt]Doug Smitt This brand new N series phone model of Nokia can be considered as an update from the Nokia N93. Due to a lot of complaints that emerged from initial users of the Nokia N93, the release of N93i will hopefully help to calm these complaints. A major difference that can be easily spotted is the new design. The N93 contains the common keypads of Nokia cell phones as compared to the metallic version of N93i. This type of keypad was first seen with the RAZR phones of Motorola and it seems that Nokia has found their own way of incorporating this stylish look into their mobile phones. Theres also a unique flipping style that the Nokia N93i is also capable of. Nokia N93i Review One of the common complaints against the N93 is its weight. It seems Nokia listened to this complaints and did something about it. Unlike N93, this new version is lighter. It weighs about 160 grams, including the battery. It is a 17g less than the N93 and it is also thinner. Another update that can be found in this phone is the sixteen million colored internal display. This is quite an increase from the 256K that N93 has to offer. This is definately a welcomed improvement. The majority of the features of N93 are still intact in the new N93i. These features include the 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss optics camera with 3x optical zoom that allows you to take great pictures. With regard to its memory, it is almost the same with the N93. These phones both have 50MB internal memory. The difference is that the upcoming N93i comes with a bigger SD card. Compared with the 128MB card of N93, N93i comes with a whopping 1GB miniSD card. However, the downside of N93i is the very short battery life, which is a common problem of Nokia N93i Review some mobile phones these days. Standby time approximately lasts up to 280 hours and around 4 hours for talk time. It is expected for this phone not to last long because of a smaller Li - Ion battery size. This could be one of the reasons why this new model is lighter compared to N93. Compared to N93, N93is battery is only 950mAh against 1100mAh of N93. Nokia could consider this as a drastic move because a lot of consumers are not really happy with the 1100mAh and with what they did, they only make things worse. Cell phone manufacturers should attend to this battery life issue because a lot of consumers are not really happy about it. Some of them would say that there is no point of having a lot of features in a mobile phone if it cant last long. Aside from these small changes with the features, it is almost identical to N93. Most of the previous configurations for N93 were kept with N93i. These are just some of the initial findings in the upcoming Nokia N93i. With its release by the first quarter of this year, there could be more reviews, both positive and negative, for this mobile phone. Written by Doug Smith. Samsung D900 - Slim not Skim

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Alice_Erin]Alice Erin The Samsung D900 is currently the world’ smallest mobile, yet not small in terms of features and functionalities. This slider handset is launched after the huge success of D500 and D600, and is attractively designed to keep up the reputation of its pedigree. It is a wonder really how the manufacturer has managed to squeeze so many features into this small gadget, and still manages to present the model with such style, sophistication and appeal. Samsung D900 measures only 103.5mm x 51mm. Topping the list of features of Samsung D900 is its 3 Megapixels camera. Hold the shutter button for 2 seconds and the camera is all set to shoot and capture. There is a LED flash and a plethora of options of 8 preset colour effects. You can also choose your white balance and exposure compensation and ISO setting. One of the most noteworthy feature of Samsung D900 is its Pan- focus mode, which reduces shutter lag. Samsung D900 will also let you record video at a max resolution of CIF 352 x 288. In terms of functionalities, Samsung D900 is quite impressive. The user interface is extremely functional, logical and responsive. One neat feature incorporated is uGo. In this, the wallpaper is set accordingly the city you are in (it recognizes the city through the basestation you’re connected to). When dark, the wallpaper changes to night cityscape, while shows cloudy weather when the reception is poor. Samsung D900 offers a good connectivity as well. It’s a quad-band phone that supports EDGE and GPRS. It also supports Pictbridge via Bluetooth and USB. Messaging services includes email, SMS, MMS, office applications and few other allied features. Samsung D900 is sure a testament to Samsung’s engineering prowess. But nonetheless there are some areas where the manufacturer can pay some attention. For example, there is no FM radio and ringtones profile in the set, the video and pictures cannot be saved in the memory card, and many find the keypad not really user-friendly. Tanning Beds and Why You Need One

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Trevor Mulholland It has been scientifically proven that spending too much time away from the sun is harmful to your health in general. The rays of the sun provide the human body with essential vitamins, and if your body does not get these vitamins you are in danger of any number of illnesses, including common colds, tonsillitis and anemia. Weather conditions differ according to location and due to that there are some people who don’t always have a chance to take a walk in the sun. If you are one of these people, this article is for you. With technology being what it is right now, mankind has been able to emulate parts of nature successfully. One of these parts is sunlight. With the use of special UVA lamps, the rays have been recreated and with them, the benefits they give. It isn’t as good as sunlight but it is a second best, and much more convenient than lying on a towel on the beach could ever be. That is why having a tanning bed at home is more important than you might think. A tanning bed is, of course, not as good as absorbing the rays of the sun, but it is an adequate substitute. With proper care and attention, spending thirty minutes to an hour on a tanning bed will keep your skin bronzed and your body healthy. As long as the strength of the lamp is moderate, the possible harms of the device will cease to exist, and you can enjoy your own piece of sun in peace. It is safe even for children from six years old as long as there is an adult supervising. Some tanning beds come with a timer, which is handy if you don’t have a clock hanging nearby. Even if you live in a sunny part of the world, it is still a good idea to think about buying a tanning bed. If you have a busy job you won’t have much time to enjoy the sun. Instead, you can relax under the heat of the lamps after you come home from a hard day at work, and not worry about the sunstroke you might be getting. If you don’t have the place to put one in your own house, try to make a weekly visit to a spa or fitness center. You will likely find a tanning bed at either of those. Suntan-bed.com provides you with information on how to determine what the best tanning beds are and where you can get your tanning bed supplies. Teaching Moments - Who Stole Your Day?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By John Bishop Every day has the potential to be a good, and in some cases, a great day for you. Few of us get up in the morning thinking that we want this to be a bad day. Yet in many cases the day turns that way because of a person, an event or because we worry something in the future. This Teaching Moment is about those small events that throw you off balance and negatively impact your day. What stole your day? Was it a boss, an unruly child, the erratic driver on the way to work, not getting the ”B” you expected on the history paper, a discourteous server at lunch, etc. Every day there are numerous people or events that can prevent us from having a good day – if we let them. The key is not letting them “steal your day.” In most cases we can not control these life experiences, but we can control how we react to them. Lao-Tzu, a Chinese Philosopher said: “He who conquers others is strong; he who conquers himself is mighty.” Question for discussion: 1. Discuss the pluses and minus of your day with your family. Be specific. 2. Discuss with your family something that almost “stole your day.” Describe the event and how you handled it. 3. Do you notice a pattern? Are there particular people or events that seem to always steal your day? Say, the drive to work, the bus to school, and the neighbor’s barking dog? etc. Discuss. Suggestions for implementation: 1. Do your- family members have suggestions on how you could have handled a particular situation? This is a learning experience for everyone in the family. The idea is to share positive ways to keep you positive and focused on what is really important. 2. Make this a fun discussion stimulating experience for everyone. 3. Learn to accept others. They may be having a bad day for any number of reasons. Take a couple of deep breathes and say to yourself: “I’m not going to let this steal my day.” We hope you have found this Teaching Moment helpful. Why Cottage Cheese Is The Healthy Cheese

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Lee Dobbins Would you believe that in France, alone, there are over 400 types of cheese that can be found? But when the word ‘cheese’ is mentioned and someone would ask what types of cheese he would be able to name, for sure, cottage cheese will be one of them. Cottage cheese derived its name from ‘cottages’ where the cheeses are made, literally. It is prepared atop stoves homes found in the rural areas. People who originally manufactured the ‘real thing’ let nature take its course by leaving the milk to coagulate and turn sour. Cottage cheese is a product of cheese curd but unlike most cheese, which is dehydrated and has color, this type of cheese retains its whey content because it is only drained, not pressed dry. The cottage cheese, unlike its relatives, does not undergo aging (maturation process) and it is also washed to give it its different tastesweet and mildly flavored. When cottage cheese is hard pressed, the end products are farmer cheese, hoop cheese, pot cheese or Queso blanco (blanco meaning ‘white’). In Sweden, cottage cheese is commonly called ‘Keso’. A naturally manufactured cottage cheese is made from fresh milk, rennet and mesophilic starter culture (this would help grow ‘good bacteria’ which is needed in giving the cheese its flavor and aids in coagulation). It is very rare to find natural cottage cheese nowadays. Commercialization of this product has made it easier to make at a shorter period of time. The commercially prepared cottage cheese, however, are made from curds that were prepared using skim milk or other milk products that are low in fat. This usually alters the original flavor of the cheese. So if one were used to the commercial cottage cheeses that flood the supermarkets, then they would be astonished to find out that these cheeses have deviated from the original ‘tanginess’ of the natural cheese. If one is curious in tasting the genuine cottage cheese, the closest one could get to the flavor is the manufactured cottage cheese, which is low in fat, cultured and named Nancy’s. The Springfield Creamery over at Eugene, Ore, prepares this. What nutrients can one get from eating cottage cheese? Again, as compared to all other cheeses, this type of cheese has low fat (5 grams where 3 grams are saturated fat), low carbohydrates (3 grams) and high in protein content (14 grams). If you are aiming for a sculpted body that is full of muscles and well toned, then cottage cheese diet is the right diet for you. Most people overlook the low carbohydrate content of this cheese. But looking at it, this low-carb food, which is high in protein, feeds the body of its needed nutrients during a strict diet. This cheese also has sodium (500 milligrams), 120 calories and 20 milligrams of cholesterol. These values are computed against a 113-gram serving. Some very interesting trivia about cottage cheese: 1. President Nixon loved to eat it together with catsup or black pepper (or both). 2. To make 15 pounds of cottage cheese, one needs to use 100 pounds of milk. If one is bored with eating cottage cheese alone, there are several ways that it can be served. One good way is to follow President Nixon’s recipe, which is to put a dash of pepper before plopping it into your mouth. Cottage cheese can be eaten like a ‘tapioca pudding’ (just add teaspoon of vanilla flavor and a packet of artificial sweetener for every cup of cottage cheese). Cottage cheese is best eaten with fruits such as blueberry, strawberry, peaches, banana or pineapple. If one is concerned with the fructose content, however, a flavored drink mix could be used as a substitute for the fruits. Speaking of ‘yumminess’, here are a few more of those recipes that use cottage cheese. You could research these recipes online: 1. Chocolate Mousse 2. Lemon Cherry Cheesecake Pie 3. Broccoli bread with Onion and Cottage Cheese 4. Cheesy Mashed Potatoes 5. All Day Macaroni and Cheese (Crockpot) Cottage cheese is all good. When you’re aiming for good health, then this should be a part of your diet. It’s tasty and nutritious, so what is there to lose? The Most Protective Covering

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Ann Stewart Protection is possibly the worlds most dire need. People today are living in fear of environmental disasters, terrorist plots, wars and plagues. How can our governments fully protect everyone? We are in the end-times before Jesus second coming. The Bible is full of prophesies describing the events and calamities leading up to it. We are feeling the effects right now. No government, bulletproof clothing, or gas mask can stop this process. The country of Egypt went through nine consecutive devastating plagues. The people had absolutely no protection from their government except for the Israelites, who were spared by God. As if that was not enough, pharaoh brought on a tenth plague by ordering all the firstborns to be murdered. But God gave Moses instructions for the Israelites to escape this horrendous disaster. There were a number of specific directives they had to follow. The most important of these was for each household to kill an unblemished firstborn male lamb on the evening the slaughter of the children was to take place. Then they were told to apply its blood on the left, right and upper door posts of their houses. The blood was for a sign on their houses for God to pass over them and spare them from the plague that night! (Ex. 5-12) Imagine having to go through an elaborate ritual of sprinkling lambs blood on your doors to ward off disasters! It worked miraculously for the Jewish nation at that time; it is still commemorated by them today as the Passover. But, what does that have to do with protecting you and me in this day? Moses was given exact instructions in the desert to build a tabernacle, where the high priest would offer a blood sacrifice for the sins of the people. (Heb. 8: 5, 7) Almost all things had to be purified by blood according to the law. The earthly tabernacle and sacrifices were a blueprint of the heavenly tabernacle. The Lamb of God, Jesus, through His Blood sacrifice on the cross at Calvary became our High Priest. (Heb. 9:22,23,24) You see, the life of all creatures is in the blood. (Lev. 17: 14) Without blood there is no life! If the animal sacrifices in the old covenant had the power to rid the people from their sins, how much more powerful is the precious Blood of Jesus shed for you! (Heb. 8: 9,13,14) At the moment of His death on the cross, the huge, heavy veil covering the Holy of Holies of the temple, where only the high priest could enter once a year, was torn from top to bottom. That veil signified the earthly body of Jesus. He was the first man to enter heaven with body and blood. (Heb. 10: 20; Mat. 27:50,51) The Old Covenant was replaced by the New. When Jesus ascended into heaven, He entered into the Holy of Holies once and for all as your High Priest. Now you, too, can enter right into the throne room because His blood covers your sins before a Holy God! (Heb. 10: 19) That is why Jesus declared that unless: “you drink his blood, ye have no life in you.” (John 6: 53) Everyone who sees the Son, and believes in Him, may have everlasting life, and will be raised up by the Father on the last day! (John 6: 40) “Being justified by His blood, you are saved from all harm through Him!” (Rom. 6:9) Therefore, have courage! “The precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot is your complete protection! The evil in this world is great because Satan is out with great fury, knowing he has very little time left. BUT: “the kingdom of our God is here, and the power of His Christ,” and you will overcome by the blood of the Lamb! How to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Garden

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By William Berg There are numerous things a home owner can do to make his or her garden humming-bird friendly. Comparatively easy adjustments can soon be rewarded by the presence of feeding humming birds as well as nesting females and their young ones. Hummingbirds feed from nectar filled flowers and are important pollinators for many species. Planting a lot of suitable flower species in your garden is therefore a great way of attracting hummingbirds. Ideally include a lot of colourful blossoms, especially red ones since hummingbirds are known to be fascinated by the colour red. This is way a majority of the humming bird feeders are red. The recommended species flower will naturally depend on your geographical location, soil type, gardening skills etcetera. Hummingbirds are preyed upon by many types of predatory birds and tree climbing snakes, and they can also fall prey to cats and other mammals. The Hummingbirds will therefore appreciate densely grown shrubs and bushes where they can stay hidden from above. There should preferably be a lot of twigs strong enough to support the tiny hummingbird, but weak enough to carry snakes and cats. By including such environments in your garden design, you may very well turn your garden into hummingbird territory. The hummingbirds might not only visit your garden to drink from a feeder; chances are that they will spend a lot of their time resting there too, especially if the surrounding gardens contains few suitable hiding spots for hummingbirds. Offer the hummingbirds one or several feeders to drink from is naturally also an excellent way of making sure that you receive plenty of hummingbird visits. If the hummingbirds have trouble locating the feeder, you can hang the feeder next to some showy and colourful plants that can be easily seen from above. Using a red feeder is also a good idea, since the hummingbirds are known to investigate red objects. Once your hummingbirds have learned to associate hummingbird feeders with food, it is usually easy to make them understand that feeders of any colour contain food. Using red dye in the hummingbird food is not necessary. Red food dye has been suspected of promoting tumour development in hummingbirds. The jury is still out on the subject, but until red food dye have been proven safe for hummingbirds, it is a good idea to stay clear of it. If your feeder is not red, you can instead place some red stickers on it to make the hummingbirds notice it. You can often find hummingbird feeders for sale in garden depots, birding shops and department stores. If you fail to locate a vendor in your area, you can always order a hummingbird feeder from one of the many Internet shops that offer hummingbird feeders and food for sale online. When you choose hummingbird feeder, it is important to pick one that is easy to clean. Hummingbirds are sensitive to mould and can be really sick if the ingest it. Hummingbird food will also ferment quite rapidly, especially in high temperatures. The feeder should therefore be cleaned frequently. More information about humming birds and humming bird feeders.
