Holy Matrimony and the Sanctity of Marriage

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Lance Winslow The sanctity of marriage is under attack in the United States, by the gay fringe. The gay and lesbian community either cannot or will not control their own or mentor their fringe, as they attack verbally and indeed threaten, intimidate and use slander to keep people from voicing their opposition to their movement towards gay marriage. Obviously I am undeterred. In fact I write this article in spite of the intimidation tactics and threats. When the gay and lesbian community is asked why they do not control their radical fringe from unlawful acts, slander, threats, intimidation and slander they state things like; To me, your statements sound as silly as “Why don’t straight people control the Christian Right”. They can’t. No, perhaps not, but they could make a big dent in the problem of the pushiness of religion in a nation which is suppose to accept all religions and/or no religion, we all agreed upon that in advance as we are all Americans right? But this does not alleviate the Gay Fringe issue or why this behavior is allowed in the gay and lesbian community, seem like a little hypocrisy there, well actually a lot. Of course the activists say things like; The Christian Right is part of the “Straight Community” if that’s how you want to phrase things but it’s silly to blame all straight people for not “controlling” them. Do you see how that disconnect happens? Well I see your logic yes of course. However the Christian right has the ball and is being a ball hog with it. The Christian Right in this case is not hurting the straight communities theme that marriage is between a man and a woman. Where as the gay fringe of some of these gay fringe young males is causing a rift, which has to be mended before marriage can be legal, due to politics and because the Christian Right/straights will sit down to talk. Often the straight community will not listen due to the overblown fringe, helping justify not having to listen to the concept of equal rights. Lots to consider as we address all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Budget Marketing: Maximizing Your Exposure

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Mat Kelly Every small business knows the importance of exposure to get customers in the door. And while execution of this basic marketing principle comes in varying degrees of complexity and cost, you do not have to empty the bank account to get your companys name in front of a targeted audience. Following the old, basic marketing model putting a sign with your companys name on the door; sprinkling your advertising budget across print, radio and television campaigns; and paying a graphic designer for a slick brochure or pamphlet minimizes your impact in the marketplace. An important step in expanding your customer base is gaining exposure to generate interest in your brand. And if you were thinking that you couldnt get a lot of exposure because of a limited budget, keep in mind that there are always effective, low-cost marketing options to attract potential customers. Heres a look at a couple of ideas to stretch your advertising dollars. Website Just under a decade ago, only the large companies were using their websites as effective marketing tools. Today, almost every business needs one. Your website serves as an essential piece of your overall marketing plan that fuels a sense of legitimacy for your business. If you dont have a website, potential customers may be turned off because these days, the perception is this: if you are a legitimate professional, you have a website. Its as important as having a phone number for your business. The options for the size, appearance and functionality of a website are endless. But a presence on the Web is essential for you to take your company beyond your word-of-mouth customer base. As you look into planning your website, remember to budget for website design, development, hosting, maintenance and content management. Trade Shows Trade shows bring a targeted group of businesses to one location, and the event is marketed toward that industrys target audience. When you participate as a vendor at a trade show, you know the customers walking in the door are more likely than the general public to be interested in your product or service. As attendees walk past your trade show booth, your display will introduce the customer to your company before they formally meet you. And you must come to the event prepared to sell your team should be skilled in delivering your elevator pitch, know the details of your product or service and be able answer any questions potential customers may ask. To make sure you attract attention and stand out from the crowd of exhibitors, you must make a smart decision about where to purchase your trade show display. If you are working with a limited budget, tabletop displays make a big statement for a small investment. And there are more advantages to table top displays than just price. Larger, more elaborate floor displays are often heavy, cumbersome, must be transported in several pieces and have a complex assembly that requires help from more than one person. Table top displays, on the other hand, are reasonably compact and lightweight, easily transportable (whether by airplane or car) and simple to put together. Many come with lighting, a shipping case, and a variety of add-on options to make your display more elaborate. If you are looking to fine-tune that polished look, remember to add table throws, trade show flooring and literature racks. If you arent quite sure which type of trade show display you want or need, you may be able to rent a more sophisticated model for a significantly lower price. Sponsorships It seems that advertising has sneaked its way into every nook and cranny of our existence and from your local weather broadcast to the Olympics, companies large and small have learned that sponsorships are advertising at its best. Companies often sponsor well-publicized events to create an association in the consumers psyche between charitable giving and their company and/or product even companies that are well-known household names. McDonalds was an official sponsor for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games; Altria (the parent company of Kraft Foods and Philip Morris) sponsors domestic violence prevention programs; from childrens health in New Zealand to classrooms for students in England, Microsoft spends millions of dollars each year in charitable giving; and scores of small and large businesses offer funding to support events and causes in their local community, from cancer walks and 10K marathons to your local after-school programs, symphony, little league teams and amateur sports leagues. No matter the size of your company, there is a charitable organization, cause or event that could use your dollars for support. Of course, the more money you give, the more exposure you will receive. But, whether you give $100 or $1,000, your company will receive some exposure. There is an endless list of other strategies to get your companys name in front of a limited audience speaking engagements, volunteer work, memberships with clubs and associations, give-away promotions etc. But through an effective website, regular trade show participation and a consistent sponsorship strategy, you will be maximizing your marketing dollars for quality exposure without blowing your budget. Ayurveda Approach To Indigestion And Concept Of Agni

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Dr. Savitha Suri The word Indigestion is commonly used to describe the discomfort in ones belly mostly caused after food consumption. Fullness, bloating, nausea, heart burn are other symptoms of Indigestion. Before discussing Indigestion, understanding the process of digestion is very essential. The Ayurveda approach of explaining digestion is very simple and effective. The food we eat is digested by Agni or body fire which is present in our body. It is very much similar to the way we cook the food. The Agni or body fire helps to digest the food which is consumed, much like the fire of a stove cooks the food kept on it. The Agni is mainly situated in Jatara or in upper part of digestive system and is called as Jataragni. The Agni is further categorized as Bhootagni (which digests the 5 pancha mahabhoota factors present in food), Dhatwagni (The agni present in tissues which help them to absorb required nutrients), Malagni ( the agni which helps in formation of body wastes like stools, sweat and urine) . The Jataragni controls bhootagni, dhatwagni and malagni. Through this it is evident that ayurveda approach of digestion explains cellular metabolism too. The factors which help agni to digest the food completely. : Thridoshas -Vata , Pitta and Kapha help agni to digest the food. If the process of digestion is compared to that of cooking rice, the stomach, like the vessel., receives food. Vata provides the necessary conditions like the air blower, Pitta acts like the stove, providing optimum working conditions while Kapha provides the moisture needed much like the water in the vessel. When all these factors are normal andwell balanced, an optimum condition is created to digest the food completely. When food is completely digested by all the agnis, the body tissues will be well nourished and one is blessed with attractive complexion, glow, longevity, strength, good health, growth, enthusiasm, vitality and overall healthy development of body and mind. The indigestion occurs when agni is imbalanced by the factors (tridoshas) which help agni to digest food. The variations of agni due to tridoshas are of 4 types. Samagni (balanced agni) :The agni which is well balanced due to balanced tridoshas indicate the condition called Samagni . Samagni digests the food completely and nourishes the body tissues very well. Vishamaagni (varying agni):- When vata is predominant this condition surfaces. The regular food gets digested normally on some occasions and poorly on others. Vata increasing foods and lifestyles lead to this condition. This variation of agni causes constipation, flatulence, pain in abdomen and other vata predominant diseases. The indigestion caused by this type of agni is called Vistabdhajeerna Teekshnagni (increased agni) : This variation of agni occurs due to predominance of pitta. Pitta increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. This variation of agni causes increased hunger, thirst, acidity, heart burn and loose motions. The indigestion thus caused is called as Vidagdajeerna. Mandagni (decreased agni): As increased moistness reduces the intensity of fire, the increased kapha reduces the intensity of agni. Kapha increasing foods and lifestyle cause this variation. Feeling Heaviness of body, swelling of eyelids (lower), belching which emit the smell of food consumed and water brash are few symptoms which of indigestion caused by mandagni. The indigestion caused by mandagni is called as amajeerna. The decreased agni improperly digests the food and this indigested food is sticky in nature and improperly nourishes tissues, causing weakness of body. This sticky improperly digested food is called ama. Ama due to its sticky nature blocks the channels of body, vitiate doshas , contaminates tissues, imbalance body functions and cause diseases. Causes of imbalance of agni which lead to indigestion 1.Spicy foods, chilly, oily foods, medicines, milk and milk products, tobacco and alcohol. 2.Irregular food habits and sleeping patterns. 3.Medications like pain killers, antibiotics, oral contraceptives and steroids. 4.Intestinal parasites. 5.Diseases of pancreas, liver, gall bladder, intestinal infections etc. 6.During pregnancy, premenstrual period, menopausal period in women. 7.Emotional upset like anxiety, stress, examination, family tensions, etc. Home Remedies for Indigestion 1.Fasting completely for one day helps to normalize imbalanced agni and digest ama. 2.Consuming liquid foods, boiled vegetables or fruit juices for 2- 3 days also improves agni and relieves indigestion. 3.Avoid the factors (mentioned above) which cause indigestion. 4.Mix a tea spoon of lemon juice, tea spoon ginger juice and little salt in a cup of water and consume thrice daily. 5.Drinking glass of warm water once in 2 hours increases agni and digests ama. 6.Cook cup of rice with 4 cups of water with crushed ginger (1) and salt. Powder long pepper (2 or 3)and fry it in a spoon of cows ghee and add it to gruel. Consume this when it hot. This is very light to digest and relieves colic pain. 7.Abdominal Massage also helps to relieve indigestion. It loosens the tight muscles and increases the blood supply to digestive system. American Journal of aphysical medicine and rehabilitation mentions that Abdominal massage has positive effects on some clinical aspects of neurogenic bowel dysfunction in patients with spinal cord injury. Consuming well balanced food balances doshas and agni and hence keeps the body healthy and free from diseases. This article is copy righted. 5 Powerful Steps to Successful Marketing

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Chris R Edwards This Newsletter is one of a series which aims to help you grow your sales and increase your margins by giving you access to the best marketing strategies around. The Collins English Dictionary defines marketing simply as the provision of goods or services to provide customer needs. The marketing mix includes the variables such as price, promotion and service to meet customer or consumer needs. Wikipedia says Marketing is a social and managerial function that attempts to create, expand and maintain a collection of customers. Most organisations tend to have a marketing function, alongside finance, production, distribution and HR. There is no doubt that without marketing most businesses will fail. In our wide experience it is more a philosophy and management style and must not be confused with selling. At one level marketing is very simple stuff. However, people take degrees in the subject and it is a vital element in top class MBAs. For others it is a black art directly linked to TV commercials and subliminal selling. There are many books on Marketing. People who have created and implemented marketing plans and learned from their mistakes have written some of the best books. Many are written for multinational organisations with large budgets. For SMEs, you must keep marketing as simple as possible. So why are so many small to medium organisations marketing challenged?Believe me marketing is easy. You just need to follow a few steps, testing and checking as you move from step to step. If a step suggests it, you should not be afraid of changing your plans or indeed scrapping the idea altogether. Three big concepts you should not forget. Customers are more important than prospects. Satisfied customers will buy again and recommend you to others. Benefits come before features. Customers and prospects are more interested in what you can do for them than in how you do it. Offering a continuous low price does not work. Customers look for added value. Most mistrust low price for ever strategies. Most will not shop around for the lowest price. Five Steps to Successful Marketing. Dont spend serious money and time unless you have followed these steps. Each step becomes progressively more expensive. Step One. On one side of A4, clearly define your product or service, quantify your immediate objectives, describe your target customers, as you see it describe the benefits to them and why they should choose you above competition. Check with people not directly involved with the project. Does it make sense? Would they buy it? Seek objective criticism. Make changes and re-check. If it is a commercial project, when does it start to make a profit? Step Two. Gather as much information as possible about your customers, the market place and your competition. Start in your files, read customer complaints and customer endorsements, interview any staff with a direct connection with customers, discreetly speak to your customers, ask trade bodies for information, search the internet, visit business libraries, become a prospect for a competitor, if low cost buy competitors product or service, acquire specialist market research, if you have the time attend trade shows, exhibitions, networking events and seminars. Use the information to answer any unknowns and to beef up the elements in Step One. Change the project as required. Does it still make sense to your test panel? If it is a commercial project, when does it start to make a profit? Step Three. When you have formulated an idea for the project, speak to your customers or prospects to gain a reaction. If you have more than one idea or several versions of an idea you need to talk to more people. If you are looking for a winner you probably need to gather quantitative data using a self-completion questionnaire. Make it easy to fill in e.g. tick boxes. Offer an incentive to participate. To ease reply use on-line surveys or freepost mail. Gather demographic data. Reinforce security and DP issues. Apply standard deviation to measure significance. It is unlikely you will achieve significance with 10% response to 1000 consumer questionnaires but you may with a 10% response to 1000 b2b questionnaires. Test the questionnaire before sending to your customer file. Other techniques include hall tests, street interviews, exit interviews and mystery shoppers. Omnibus surveys are used to establish a much bigger sample size but with a limited number of questions. If you are looking for greater customer insight to a concept or project you will need to undertake the more expensive qualitative research. Focus groups, workshops, one to one interviews are all techniques to be considered. Objectivity using an external moderator is necessary. Remember market research exercises do not produce creativity. All the creativity must come from you or your agencies. The other thing to realise is most of your competitors will not be researching - which gives you a massive competitive advantage. Step Four. It is likely that the product or service proposition will change as a result of the information gathered in Step 3. Go back to the one side of A4 from Step One and see if changes need to be made to the basic business plan. Now list all the opportunities you have. This is the creative part. Try brainstorming it can work or be a complete waste of time but it is cheap and fun to do. Look at all the market opportunities open to you. Cost the options. If it is a commercial project, when does it start to make a profit? You may decide to have different projects/services for several markets. Step Five. Produce a marketing plan for the next 12 months in some detail. Years two and three are needed for cash flow. Producing a 5 year plan is generally a waste of time unless it is a large capital project with a long gestation period. Produce the product/service and test it with the new target groups or even go back to the original market research respondents. Test the advertising and promotional materials especially if direct marketing is the main strategy. Visit our web site http://www.deve.co.uk for more information and marketing hints and tips. Alternative Medicine: What Is It?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Jessica Burde What is alternative medicine? It is a phrase that has been tossed around more and more in the media, the bookstores, and increasingly, the doctor’s office, but how often does anyone say what alternative medicine is? Theoretically, alternative medicine is any form of medicine that does not fit with in the scientific framework of western medicine. Once a form of medicine has been proven scientifically effective, and a theory has been determined to explain in the language of western medicine why it is effective, it should no longer be considered alternative Unfortunately, after the theory comes the politics. In reality, in the United States, alternative medicine is any form of medicine that has not been accepted as scientifically valid by the American Medical Association and the United States Government. In other countries different official bodies will determine what is and is not alternative medicine. In the United States, massage is alternative medicine. In Canada massage is conventional medicine, and as such, highly regulated. Would you believe that according the US government’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, vitamins are a complementary or alternative medicine (depending on how they are used) that have not yet been proven to have any greater effect on the human body then a placebo? Personally, I’d like to know if they would like to be treated for scurvy with a placebo. I’ll stick with vitamin C. There are theoretical uses for vitamins that have not yet been fully proven, but that does not make the proven effects any less scientifically valid. At the same time, just because someone claims what they offer is medicine does not make it true. Herbal supplements are not regulated, and may not fully disclose their ingredients. They certainly will not tell you about any dangerous interaction with your heart medication! Of course, you can ask an expert, but keep in mind that there are many kinds of alternative medicine, an acupuncturist is not necessarily trained in herbs, and your primary care physician probably won’t be trained in any of them. If you are interested in using alternative medicine, either for a specific problem, or simply improve your overall health, it’s probably best to first research what kinds of alternative medicine you are interested in, and speak with you doctor about whether or not she will be willing to work with an alternative medicine practitioner. Then find a practitioner who has had training in that specific area of alternative medicine. Most forms of alternative medicine are not licensed in the United States, so ask where they went to school, and how long they have been practicing. Then they can work with your doctor to make sure you get the care you need, without any unexpected side effects. Some forms of alternative medicine that might be worth looking into are: Oriental medicine: Oriental medicine is the only form of alternative medicine that is truly comparably to western medicine as a complete system of medicine. Oriental medicine is based on several theories developed thousands of years ago and first elaborated on in the Yellow Emperor’s Classic, between three and five thousand years ago. Oriental medicine includes the practices of massage, acupuncture, herbal therapy, qi gong, and several others. Tradition Chinese Medicine is a variant of oriental medicine specific to China. It is the only variant of oriental medicine the can be found with relative ease in the United States. In many parts of Asia, oriental medicine is still considered the standard of medical care and western medicine is ‘alternative.’ Herbal therapy: Herbal therapy is probably the most common form of alternative medicine found in the United States, and quite possibly one of the riskiest. While most of the conventional medicines doctors prescribe today were derived from herbs, the herbal supplements commonly on sale have no common dosages, mat contain fillers, and will rarely warn of side effects. While herbs can be used to treat everything that medication can, and possibly quite a bit more, make sure you speak with a trained herbalist before taking any. They can tell you what dosage is safe, what suppliers are worth using, and any potential side effects. Homeopathy: Homeopathy was developed in the 1800’s by two doctors who noticed that quinine, the only medicine capable of treated malaria, caused symptoms of malaria in healthy people who were given it. They theorized that like would cure like, so caffeine which normally causes wakefulness, would be used to help someone who was not sleeping through the night, sleep better. Homeopathy is probably the only alternative medicine that is safe to try without speaking with an expert, because the active substance is so dilute that it is not possible to over dose, or incur side effects on the amounts in the local health food store, never mind the few bottles you would keep in your home. At the same time, it is still best to consult a homeopath to be sure that what your taking will work for what you need. Massage: Massage is the use of hands or tools to manipulate the muscles and tendons. The two most common uses of massage are to ease aches and pains, and for stress relief. While there are many conditions that massage will obviously not help with (diabetes, for instance), there are many that it is surprisingly effective on, such as eating disorders, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition, almost any muscular injury can be treated with massage to prevent scar build up, speed healing, and increase a restricted range of motion. There are many different forms of massage therapy, including Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Pre-Natal Massage, Shiatsu, Thai Massage, Lomi Lomi, Medical Massage, Chair Massage, Aromatherapy Massage and Hot Stone Massage. If you go to a massage therapist for a medical condition, make sure they are trained in Medical Massage. Some states have licensing programs for massage therapists now, as do most European countries. If you live in an area that has licensing, make sure the therapist you go to is licensed. Other forms of alternative medicine include: energetic healing, aromatherapy, Rolfing, cranial-sacral therapy, and most forms of holistic medicine. I am a trained massage therapist, and grew up surrounded by alternative medicine. I entered massage training almost by accident, and found that I had fallen into the place I truly belonged. I believe that healthy human contact is the most powerful medicine there is. Satellite Telephone - What Is It?

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Paul_Cris]Paul Cris A Scottish born American inventor Alexander Graham Bell 1847-1922 A.D. - invented the telephone in the year 1876. The telephone underwent many more innovations and today we see a bewildering variety, in very many sizes and shapes flooding the markets. There has been a giant leap in the telecommunications area and today it is possible to send voice, data, pictures, video, stills etc to distant lands at unimaginable speeds in analog and digital formats. Such information can also be transmitted through fibreoptic cable in the form of light waves. Also it is possible to send such information in the form of radio-waves. A Satellite phone therefore is a distinctive instrument, which has been devised to enable voice and other data transmission possible through a satellite; in the form of radio waves! There are very many variations of landline telephones and even more variations in cellular phones. Then, what is the need for satellite phone? The clarity in landline if the voice or data is sent in the analog format, is susceptible to noise interferences. Cell phones depend on cell towers and cell exchanges. If you have to talk to someone 1000 kilometers away in all probability you may have to cross many cells to reach the receiver. Again, if the receiver happens to be in the so-called fringe areas, the reception may not be to your satisfaction. Since satellite telephones do not need the existence of cell-towers or cell sites, they go out of the ambit of any geographical dependency and, therefore, it becomes possible to have a dependable and regular communication. They can be used from any place on the globe. Governments and Militaries of many countries are using satellite phones for many years. Only over the last couple of years, satellite phone are being used for commercial and personal use. They can be very handy if you go into a very remote area a desert or a jungle. Paul has been providing answers to lots of queries through his website on a wide variety of subjects ranging from satellite phones to acne. Emotional Eating - How to Control Your Eating Choices

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Curtis G. Schmitt Are you in control of your emotions, or do your emotions control you? Tell me if you’ve had this experience: You stuff yourself at dinner, and later that night or the next day while you’re thinking back on what a glutton you were, you promise yourself that you’ll never do that again. Starting now, you’re turning over a new leaf. Things are going to be different! And they are…for a few days, maybe. But before you know it, your old eating habits have returned. Why? A few years ago, I restricted myself to a special diet–vegetables and fruits only–for 6 weeks as part of a cleanse program I was doing. I was shocked by how difficult it was. I craved things like pizza and cookies, not out of hunger, but out of an emotional need for them. It was only when I stopped eating my “comfort foods” that I realized just how out of control I was–my emotions had been controlling my eating choices. Maybe you’re aware of your emotional attachment to certain foods, maybe you’re not. But food choice is just one of the ways we are controlled by our emotions. To understand why, let’s look at how the brain works. Whenever you experience something with any of your five senses, that signal travels through your nervous system to your brain. It enters you brain at the back and travels across the brain to the front, where rational thinking takes place. But before it reaches the front of your brain it travels through the limbic system. This is the emotional center of the brain. What this all means is that every experience you have goes through the emotional center of your brain before it gets to the rational center! This has two stunning implications: 1. Every experience has an emotional component whether you’re conscious of it or not. 2. If your emotional reaction is strong enough, it will determine your response before you even have a single rational thought about the experience. When you see that dessert, and then half of it is in your mouth before you even realize it, you’ve had an emotional reaction that completely bypassed your logical brain. As logical as you think you are–especially you men–you are first and foremost an emotional creature. To be successful in life, you must learn how to manage your emotions. The extent to which you can manage your emotions is referred to as Emotional Intelligence (EQ for short). So I ask again, are you in control of your emotions, or do your emotions control you? In order to make a lifestyle change like changing your diet, you must have a high level of personal EQ. Without it, your actions and reactions become emotional compulsions instead of rational choices. Personal EQ consists of two parts: 1. Self-awareness 2. Self-management Self-awareness of your emotions is increased simply by asking yourself throughout the day, “What am I feeling right now? Why am I feeling this way?” Self-management of your emotions is increased by asking yourself the additional question, “What am I going to do with this emotion right now?” The good news is that increasing your self-awareness has a snowball effect (it gets easier the more you do it), and it leads very naturally to increased self-management. Make it a daily practice to ask those questions and you’ll soon feel like an expert. The objective here is not to stop feeling your emotions, but to become aware of them so that they do not control you. That way you will make more conscious eating choices that support your health goals. 2007 Curtis G. Schmitt About the Author: Curtis G. Lose Weight & Improve Your Cholesterol

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne Do you know everything you need to know about your health status? Sure you look great in the mirror (or do you?), but do you know everything you need to know about your cardiovascular health, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol levels (both good and bad cholesterol)? Preemptive disease prevention is the single most powerful technique anyone could ever use to extend their life and stay healthy and energetic for decades to come. You might be a father of a young family who wants to be around to see his children go to college, get married, and have kids of their own. Who wouldn’t, of course? But often, men and women have stressful, time-consuming jobs that don’t give you time for exercise, not to mention the crappy eating options that go along with that type of lifestyle. So you owe it to your family to know how your health is, and then to try and improve it. Knowing your health information is extremely important to anyone that has a family history of heart disease or diabetes. Research shows that genetics are one of the biggest factors determining your risk for these diseases. So the more you know now, the better you can avoid problems in the future. You want to be able to provide for your family for a long life, right? Spending a hundred bucks now on your health could save your family literally tens of thousands of dollars later. And as a trainer, it is important to know your personal health information so that you can continue to set the best example to your clients. If you think you can eat all the fast food you want just because you are active, the truth is that it can seriously and negatively impact your health. And who would want to be trained by someone that has terrible cholesterol levels or high-blood sugar? And what if, after getting your results back, you find something out of place. Won’t you be glad that you took the steps to correct it now instead of later? Getting your blood tested is such a simple thing to do. And when you get your results, you and your family will all have the piece of mind knowing your health status, and what you need to do to improve it. Now I’ve been using strength and interval training for many years and that helps people lose weight faster than anything else. And although I’m still relatively young, I believe that it is never too early to know your blood cholesterol and blood sugar values. In fact, I suggest that everyone over the age of 30 should get a baseline physical examination and get as many of the following blood tests done as possible. So earlier this year, I went to great lengths to get my results. I was willing to do whatever I had to in order to get my results and to learn as much about my health as possible. So not only did I get the normal blood tests done (cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar), but I also went to a University laboratory to have even more blood tests taken that will give me an even more accurate estimation of my cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk. These additional tests included hemoglobin-A1C (HBA1c), C-reactive protein (CRP), and homocysteine. It is also important to know your hormone levels for fat loss, so I had insulin and testosterone tested as well. If your insulin levels are not controlled, you will have a hard time losing fat. And if you are a man with low testosterone levels, then you will have a hard time putting on muscle and losing fat. Men that eat a very low fat diet tend to have low testosterone. But they can be returned to normal simply by eating healthy fat sources. So simply by following the strength and interval program and a healthy lifestyle (eating lean protein sources, healthy fat sources, low-glycemic and high-fiber fruits and vegetables), you can improve your health status. And add intense exercise to the mix, as found in the strength and interval workouts, and your health levels will improve dramatically so that you can live a long, prosperous life full of vitality. My Results (All goals are for primary prevention of disease) Total Cholesterol = 157mg/dl (Normal = 150-225) HDL = 54 mg/dl (Normal = 30-70, should be over 40) LDL = 103 mg/dl (Normal = 70-130) (Lab’s comment on HDL: Your level is very high!) TG = 1.90 mM (Goal: less than 2.3mM) Glucose = 73mg/dl (Goal = less than 130) HBA1c = 4.6 mg/dl (Less than 7 is very healthy.) (HBA1c measures your average blood glucose over the past 4 - 6 weeks and is considered to be a better indicator of diabetes risk than glucose.) Insulin = 6.7 IU/ml (Normal = 6-20) CRP = 1.16 mg/l (Normal = Up to 4.9) (Normative range for untrained persons 1.6-4.3 while trained persons can be as low as 0.52) Homocysteine = 11.2 M (Normative ranges 5-15 M, average 10 M: 15-30 M = moderate hyperhomocysteinemia) Testosterone (total) = 647ng/dl (Normal = 270-1100) For more info on these measures, please see your doctor. Acupuncture May Help with Hot Flashes

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By Michael Roland High quality research is showing a link between Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and breast cancer. In fact with long term HRT, over ten years, the risk may even double. As news travels about the possible harm caused by this therapy, women across America and indeed across the globe are responding by declining HRT. Of course one of the great benefits of HRT has been the reduction of menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. Mild hot flashes can be annoying, while severe hot flashes can be debilitating. Mayo clinic reported that up to 75% of American menopausal and post-menopausal women suffer from hot flashes. Decrease in HRT usage means an increase in hot flash sufferers. While the scientific evidence is still mixed, a recent study published in the Journal of Fertility and Sterility suggests that acupuncture may be helpful in reducing hot flashes. Acupuncture, the ancient art of using tiny needles to affect the bodys energies, may have an effect on hormones. Women who received acupuncture in the study had a reduction of the severity of their hot flashes. Acupuncturists and their patients have long known that acupuncture can be helpful for a host of conditions. So, why is the research only now starting to show that acupuncture works? Michael Roland, L.Ac., MTCM a licensed acupuncturist who works with Dr. Andrew Weils Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and has a private practice in Tucson, Arizona explains it like this: Effective research models for studying acupuncture need more development. Were still trying to use the same research model to see if acupuncture is effective that we use to study whether or not pills work. Both acupuncture and pill usage are very different and so require different research models. Acupuncture is, by its very nature subjective, it must be. The higher the skill of the acupuncturist the better the results for a broader range of patients. We are not little pills. When we have skilled acupuncturists working within research models that allow their skills to be used properly, we will see more and better results. However, even within the current constraints of research models, acupuncture is showing itself to be effective. Should you try acupuncture for your hot flashes? There is evidence to suggest that it will be helpful. Its also safe. The British Medical Journal published a study showing no serious adverse reactions in 34,000 acupuncture treatments. Many patients also say that they experience a sense of well-being and relaxation during and after acupuncture treatments. It is also possible, in some cases, to treat more that one condition in the same session. So if you have headaches and hot flashes for instance, acupuncture can help both within the same session. Along with acupuncture, you may also want to try a higher fiber diet that includes soy as well as regular exercise. Good Luck and Good Health!
