The Reality that we have experienced, which few have, changes us, and because of this change toward something quite ineffable, it is difficult to continue with the pretenses required in shallow relationships. Things have to be real, and when they are real, they do not always live up to the expectations of those who do not have spiritual tendencies. Sometimes, spiritual people just need time alone, and not everybody understands this, especially those caught up in the carousel of the world. If a relationship is launched solely by hormones (and hormones are not to be taken lightly), the high of the love affair calms down much faster for the spiritual person, and the other will not understand. He or she will see it as a rejection, while it is not a rejection at all, only a return to the base of the spiritual person, the base that can never be dismissed once that turn is made away from the world. Its rare to find a partner with compatible spiritual tendencies. The reason for this is because many people seem spiritual on the exterior, but underneath, they are still immature in this area. While the true spiritual person will naturally tend toward solitude and silence, those not yet advanced to that level will become quickly bored after the playacting is over. If you’re applying for entry level positions, you are most likely competing against other people who have little to no relevant experience as well, so that’s a positive thing to keep in mind. Maybe they don’t all have the proper degree either. If you are applying for jobs that require experience that you don’t have, you may have to take a different tack. If anything, having a degree that is different from the field you want to go into might make for an interesting talking point during an interview. What you might do before you think about spending time and money to go back to university is to take a course in the particular field you want to go into to get you started and that you can add to your resume. You might also consider contacting anyone you know who works in the field you are planning on working in or alternatively, someone they know who you can speak to for advice. By Heather Poole If a U.S. citizen wishes to sponsor his or her spouse for a green card (”lawful permanent residency” under U.S. immigration law; see www.uscis.gov), timing can always be an issue. Whether a U.S. citizen marries the immigrant spouse inside or outside of the U.S. can affect how soon the couple can begin living together in the U.S. When a U.S. citizen marries a foreign national (”immigrant” for purposes of this article) and the marriage takes place outside of the U.S., it could be difficult for the immigrant spouse to enter the U.S. as s/he once did, i.e., on a tourist visa or other temporary visa to visit his or her family, friends, and spouse. The reason that re-entry into the U.S. is difficult for an immigrant is that when an immigrant marries a U.S. citizen, that shows CIS and airport DHS inspection officers that the immigrant has the permanent intent to stay in the U.S. and not return to their home country. Yet, when the immigrant tries to enter on a tourist visa or other temporary visa, the immigrant is telling CIS that s/he plans to stay only for a short period in the U.S. This conflicting temporary v. permanent intent problem (commonly referred to as “dual intent”) usually results in CIS concluding that the noncitizen committed “visa fraud.” Further, if a DHS (www.dhs.gov) inspecting officer at the airport discovers that the immigrant is married to a U.S. citizen when the immigrant tries to enter on a tourist or other temporary visa, the officer will be likely to conclude that the immigrant will overstay their visa and live permanently in the U.S. because of the existence of a U.S. citizen spouse giving the immigrant “good reason to stay” in the U.S. Because of this and due to potentially longer processing times with immigrant visas and the K-3 (a temporary visa that allows spouses of U.S. citizens to enter the U.S. to wait until their immigrant visa based on the marriage is processed and approved), many couples decide to marry within the U.S. to take advantage of the usually faster Adjustment of Status process instead of waiting for consular processing. Many times, couples prefer to legally marry in the U.S. but then have a renewal of vows or another ceremony (often called a religious ceremony) for friends and family abroad, so they can start the immigration process for the immigrant spouse as soon as possible while the immigrant spouse is in the U.S. This option could also prove risky because if the immigrant spouse entered on a temporary visa (such as tourist visa), a CIS officer at the green card interview in the U.S. may conclude that the immigrant committed visa fraud - i.e., never disclosed his/her intent to marry and stay in the U.S. when entered with a tourist visa. Regardless, where you decide to legally marry (not necessarily a religious ceremony or even a wedding, perhaps just a justice of the peace), could significantly change your options and processing times and what path you choose. It is always best to discuss your wedding plans with a qualified immigration attorney to decide what path is best for your situation and the consequences and benefits of marriage outside and inside the U.S. The Immigrant Visa Process Once a U.S. citizen marries an immigrant spouse whether inside or outside of the U.S., the U.S. citizen will have to apply for an immigrant visa and provide all supporting documentation for that application with U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services in the U.S. Once CIS approves the petition, the case is (www.travel.state.gov) for continued processing. Once a visa number is assigned to the case and final documentation received, the case is transferred to the consulate nearest the noncitizen spouse’s foreign address, which will arrange for the spouse to be interviewed (much like a green card interview in the U.S.) by a consulate nearest the immigrant spouse’s foreign residence. Assuming all goes well, the spouse will be issued a green card in his or her passport upon entry into the U.S. The processing time for this entire process can take 9 months - 2 years, depending on which state the U.S. citizen spouse resides in. There are a few exceptions to this process, that allow a couple to save months of processing time so as not to be separated for long periods. If time is a concern and before a couple tries to cut corners in the immigration process, a couple should consult an attorney right away, so as not to make any decisions that could ruin the immigrant spouse’s chances for a green card. K-3 temporary visa The K-3 visa (http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/publicaffairs/newsrels/life081401.htm) was created in response to the long processing time it can take for a foreign spouse to be issued a green card for entry into the U.S. A person may receive a K-3 visa if that person is already married to a U.S. citizen, has a pending Immigrant Visa filed by their U.S. citizen spouse with U.S. CIS (www.uscis.gov), and seeks to enter the United States to await the approval of the petition and subsequent lawful permanent resident status. This visa must still be applied for with CIS and once approved, must be sent to the consulate nearest the foreign noncitizen’s spouse for issuance. The One-Step Option The last option that may affect whether a U.S. citizen marries his or her immigrant spouse inside or outside of the U.S. is the possibility that the couple can apply directly at the U.S. consulate in the immigrant spouse’s home country for an immigrant visa (which leads to a green card), thus bypassing the CIS process in the U.S. This option is usually restricted to U.S. citizen spouses who have been residing in the immigrant spouse’s foreign country for some time and also depends on the size of the consulate and the number of cases the consulate receives each year. Consulates often change their procedures. To determine whether a particular consulate allows this option, you can visit the consulate’s website to find more information or links to more helpful information (http://usembassy.state.gov). An attorney may also be able to save you time by inquiring on your behalf to the consulate. It’s important to weigh the couple’s goals, the CIS and consulate processing times, the couple’s financial concerns, and the immigrant spouse’s immigration history in deciding whether or not to marry inside or outside of the U.S. Last but not least, make sure to consult a family lawyer to determine whether the U.S. citizen and the immigrant spouse’s foreign divorce decrees will be recognized by the state the U.S. citizen lives in if the U.S. citizen marries his or her immigrant spouse in that U.S. state. Because I’ve been to marriage counseling, and I have read all the self-help marriage books, and because, I did all the things “they say” that are supposed to help you love who you married. But the reality of it is folks, there is no magic pill or potion you can take, and there is no person, besides you, that is going to heal your marriage as it is meant to be healed. He said, she said scenarios don’t work, and neither will finger pointing and blaming one another. We can brow beat our spouse until we are blue in the face, and we can continue to have affairs just because our marriage is on rocky times, and we can listen to strangers tell us how to save our marriage, but I’ll tell you what, it will not make us better people inside, so what good is all that for our marriage? What we want and need for marriage is to be the person God intended for us to be so we can have a better marriage. A man and a woman marriage relationship is the four legs that support the marriage, and what you believe for your marriage is the root of how good or bad the marriage actually will be. If you want to be a healthier person spiritually, and even mentally, you need to enhance the spiritual side of who you are so you can grow into the loving individual God wants you to become, which is the whole and complete person you truly can be! We all have certain issues in our lives that hold us back from attaining the spiritualism that I am talking about. What is holding you back? That is the question? How can you tell? Don’t let the world fool you; don’t let people fool you into believing what your ears want to hear. Look for the fruit. If there isn’t any, then what good is that? “He who tends a fig tree will eat its fruit” Proverbs 27:18. And in the same concept, “He who tends “himself” will eat its fruits in marriage, and whatever else he embarks on in his life. If you originate from God, why are you looking to a mere stranger to heal your marriage troubles? God has told us what he wants for us to do for our marriage, but no one is following these precepts, not even those who call themselves Christian’s. If you are sinning against the marriage in any way, how can you really expect the standards of society to save you from yourself? Society isn’t going to tell you that being unfaithful is wrong, just as it won’t tell you what is good and right for your marriage. Society created the things that are tempting to us and wrong for our marriage. Immoral behavior and imagery is shoved into our face every single day and everywhere! God desperately wants us to put on His shield of armor and He will protect us from the evils of the outside world. This is precisely why we need to fix our self FIRST before we can fix anything with marriage! We do this by letting God lead us not into temptation of society, but instead deliver us from all the evils of society! “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full body armor (figuratively speaking) of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” [Ephesians 6:10-13] We ought not to stand proud in our sin, but rather put our head down low, and stand humbly before God ready to give our sin(s) to Him. Now, I certainly don’t know everything there is to know about the mysteries of God, and, like many of you, I am learning something new about the world around me every single day. Not a day goes by that God doesn’t somehow and in some way reveal to me something new to share with others. I have dealt with personally many of the issues most marriages go through in a lifetime, and sometimes my marriage was a living nightmare. But I grew out and away from what was holding me back, and I managed to heal my marriage with the help of biblical principles. I didn’t learn how to be happy and content with myself by going to a therapist or a marriage counselor. And I knew that I couldn’t fix my marriage until I fixed myself first.
